Kia ora
Of late, my PC time has been limited - hence the delay ... apologies.
The 8th and 9th were ripe for PTs. Northbound, southbound and westbound traffic leaving mostly PTs ... I also observed some short contrails, some long contrails, some persistent fragments, and sometimes nothing being laid.
There was a lot of high altitude whisp cirrus - quite the norm for PT days .... I have recently pondered where the sylph like forms have gone ... it's been a while (6 months +) since I have observed anything to note.
Anyway .... here are some pics to share ... I have a query re pics 7 & 8
8 August
1. Westbound - late avo. Not a busy flight path ... when a plane on this path leaves a PT, it's usually a goodun, and more often than not it is fragmented, (see pic 2)
2. ... fragment of above trail ... this hung there for over an hour - minimal drift.
3. I adjusted the contrast and brightness to try and show width of this very faint but extensive band drifting eastward. I could see the faint outline all the way - the camera didn't quite get it all. I was surprised to see this band - the only source of the band was a 'long contrail' observed approx. 20 mins earlier - but I passed it off as nothing - dissipating regularly and quickly (but not completely as seems) ... mmm
4. Southbound - leaving PT.
5. sunset - typical of day further west ... note the PT remnants (lower-right), the same PT as in pic #1.
6. closeup of above ...
9 August
7. Mid morning -northbound PT ... typical looking ... nice and straight .. then .....
8. ... it veers to the east ... and I got it on camera ... I am intrigued by this and am very interested in any thoughts on WHY this would happen .... I have seen this happen 4 times over the last 6 months (approx) - never before that - and all obs in the same area!! ... I saw one plane sweep east far enough to go around the hill top. Why is there such a shift in the flight path?
9. ... unusual to see PTs morph like this ...
10. Northbound - usual flight path.

Thanks for the comments :-)
Solohawk .. I have noticed lately that many PTs appear to dissipate quite quickly without the usuall visible build up of widening band etc - but a thin band can be barely seen. Less visible may be the objective ??
A couple of days later (11th) was pretty much total cloud cover with impending rain. Although, through the odd break in the lower clouds I was able to glimpse several northbound PTs - they drifted eastward and dissipated quickly - (windy). I managed to get a couple of images (below)
It was a busy air traffic avo for a Tuesday ... if there was no low cloud we would be saying blitz. I imagine there would be advantages from dropping particles+ into rain clouds. OR maybe they are going hard out while they can't be seen. ??
1. 2:59pm 2 x northbound PT
2. 3:00pm .. freshly laid and not so fresh PTs
3. 90 secs later ... same PTs. as #2 pic
4. 3:39pm. 1 x fresh northbound PT.

| I posted some photos similar to shot 2 above a short while ago. The interesting thing was that the trail was right over Auckland City - something you don't see very often. I tend to think the same thing when I see this happen on cloudy days - they're "making haste while the sun doesn't shine"! |

| Have you ever seen the polymar on the ground after heavy rian bought on by trails that a few obserbvers have mentioned? I have seen photos but not in person. In the photos it looked like white foam. |
