Kia ora all

A chilly wind ... icy looking high altitude clouds around in morning ... clearer skies later in avo. Sundog ? mid morning. Fluro clouds mid avo.

Natural occurrence ...... maybe in some parts, but not around here - a relatively new occurrence (albeit natural) ....

1. Mid morning - watched this for about 10 mins - took many photos. (and found something(s) interesting)

notice the regular rectangular shape cloud upper left of sundog ... odd looking

2.

3.

4. a, & b, ... the interesting stuff ... next two images 13 secs apart (the first is a crop of image #1 above) - no other images with these markings on them ???? birds??? nah, I not think so ... mmmm .... maybe I wasn't the only one interested in the sundog this morning ...

5. ... mid avo and a showcase of several fluro cloud forms ...

6.

We had the same "fluro" or oilslick coloured clouds up here yesterday plus lots of really sketchy looking cirrus stuff ruapaka. The first I'd seen like that in a while - very bright and clear. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera with me when the best of it was visible. Took some later but they never turned out so good I think due to the angle of the sun from where I was then. BUT, look at these shots taken one after the other in quick succession - there's something on the second that wasn't on the first and this was in the area where all the irridescent clouds were the brightest. Got no idea what it is but all the birds I've ever captured flying past turn out black not white. It wasn't a plane either. Dust? Who knows... Zooms don't reveal anything on my little camera...

(If you zoom-in the photos you can start to see the colour in the uppermost cloud but although to the eye it was very obvious, in the photos they just turned out all washed out unfortunately.)

I should add that that white object in the second photo looks almost identical to the bright little moving "light dots" two of witnessed by eye right near some freshly laid "short" trails a short while ago and documented in a post elsewhere here (that I don't have time to search for right now). I didn't see this one this time by eye but I wasn't really focussing on that area of sky for long either.

Soooo.... just prior to the Sichuan earthquake there was all those photos and videos of the "colours" in the sky - rainbow colours on "cirrus" formations as seen here in this Youtube video and others as well as lots of photos posted online - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KKMTSDzU1Z4

I caught a snippet of news last night about the quake down south and they mentioned Sichuan a couple of times on there.

A longshot maybe but it's gotta make you wonder if what you saw has any connection considering the timing. And I was just thinking that we hadn't heard from you in about a month too

Hey Crakka ... been meaning to reply here for a bit ... sorry for delay.

Re irridescent cloud and earthquake connection .... I had not thought of that at the time of posting ... the SI earthquake(s) was a few of days later - I think the Sichuan earthquake happened same day as colours observed. Still .... gotta wonder.

Since posting this thread I have been vigilant looking for colours ... I have observed the exact same clouds as posted above, in the exact same conditions, yet NO colours.

Many cloud types can have the irridescent colours - "an optical effect" ..... we are seeing the same as many others around the world - many images on net from all parts of world.

I've said this before ..... the irridescent colours I have observed in clouds around Marlborough is a new thing - 2 yrs maybe ... that gets me questioning any 'natural' explanation. :?

There has been several days over the last year when those vividly iridescent clouds have drifted over Wellington from Marlborough, I have quite a lot of photos of them buried deep on my hard drive somewhere....

Yep, definitely new phenomena to me in the last couple of years too. A lifetime of watching the skies & weather conditions as a surfer, not to mention the hours spent sitting out there in calm conditions watching the sky & sea and I never saw anything quite the same as this before. More proof to me is when I've highlighted it to a few elderly people, especially when I've said "Now look at it through these sunglasses" and seen their almost unanimous amazed reactions. Sunnies tend to make it clearer as you block out more glary UV. Their reactions were all pretty much the same "...I've never seen that in the clouds before!" or "What's causing that? Is that something new like pollution from aeroplanes or something?". Thought that last one was a classic!
