Firstly, no apologies for any slow loading times you guys might experience on dial-up! There's no way I wanted to reduce the quality of these particular photos down anymore than I already have!!! There's just over 2MBs here so if you're on 56k (or less yoiks!) - go make a cuppa after reading this and sit back and wait... it won't take that long :D
Strange goings on out west this Sunday! I've told you guys before that we keep sighting these partial or stop-start trails out in West Auckland late afternoons. This afternoon it happened again but it wasn't just one trail this time... plus... there was other stuff!
Today was a beautiful clear blue sky day so things were looking good but as usual late afternoon while I was out I gave the western sky over the Waitakeres a bit of a glance now and then. Between 4.30 & 5pm on the way back from a little shopping and lo & behold - a single short trail appears in the usual place. Really only just saw this as it was being finished off so head to a spot where I can take some photos. Just taking a couple of shots as it has this amazing spiralled look to it and then... another fresh trail starts magically appearing just to the right of it! Again a short burst one but this time on the opposite diagonal angle in the same area. Couldn't believe my luck and I'm thinking - right place right time once again! Sun is just to the right and this definitely looks like an attempt to create some kind of artificial clouds right in that same area for some reason. Second one also begins to take on a definite spiral effect. See the following sequence of shots.
No. 1 was taken when I arrived at a vantage spot on Corban Ave, Henderson. Looks like there's even an earlier made one to the left of the spiralled one I saw being finished -
2 & 3 - Just after taking that another trail starts forming to the right of the spiralled one so I snap a couple showing that being laid -
4, 5 & 6 - Decide to move over slightly and block the sun out with a shrub. Freshly laid trail starting to spread and then spiralling in no. 6 -
7 & 8 - Decide I need to block the sun out even more to try and maybe get clearer shots so move over a bit more so the sun is just behind a building to the right. Spiralled trail to the right takes on a bright glow being closer to the sun -
9, 9a & 9b - So I'm sitting there staring at this site and I become aware that I'm seeing very tiny specks of light whizzing past from left to right on about the same plane as the trails and disappearing behind the building. At first I'm thinking "that was insects" but I also see a few insects buzzing around against the light from the sun and the path of every one is erratic with no straight flightpaths. The 3 specks that I saw whizz by had perfectly straight trajectories and moved way faster than the insects. Ok, so I'm now thinking I may have just seen something anomalous OR it was a trick of either the light or my eyes so I go to the car, haul a family member over to the same spot and tell them to watch the same area to see if they see anything buzzing around. They sighted 2 of the same specks doing exactly the same thing. I asked them if they could also see the insects (obviously flies or bees) and they said exactly what I had said - that the insects moved all around the placed whereas the 2 specks they saw just zoomed straight acrosss the front of us. I still had doubts that we'd seen anything anomalous as they were tiny and moving to too fast to see anything with clarity but it was definitely the strangest thing we'd both witnessed as far as seeing "moving lights" of any kind mainly because we had both seen the same thing. Anyway, after that I took more shots, including the very last one an hour later and we went home. Later in the evening after dinner we viewed them on the PC. Well... see for yourselves. Shot number 9 revealed something that pretty much correlated exactly with what we saw earlier! We were fairly excited that my little camera picked this up and although it's not super detailed it was enough evidence for me that we'd seen "something". It's no "piece of cloud" or anything either as it doesn't show up in any other photo either side of that shot. The speed that this "something" crossed the sky in front of us tells me it wasn't any commercial plane I've ever seen flying before plus we both saw more than one within seconds of each other travelling the same or very similar flightpaths. Here's the photos -
10, 11, 11a & 11b - The first trail I'd seen laid then really started to grab my interest in the way it had spiralled & twisted so I took a few shots of that. And then when we viewed the photos on the pc later in the evening it too appeared to have a at least one little "spot" in or on it that looked the same as the one in the preceding photos. I really wish we or someone else had've taken photos this evening with a decent camera as that trail looks like it may have even had more going on in & around it than my shots can really show. It may just be the light at that time or it may be something else - pretty hard to tell as these photos lose a lot of clarity when zoomed.
12 - This shot was taken approx an hour after the first ones and shows how the trails transformed. Very interesting looking man-made clouds! The one on the right by this stage had assumed a very spiralled-looking 3D vortex shape that to the eye was very impressive! It also had some distinct black colouration by then that didn't seem to be present earlier (see the previous ones where it appears to be glowing quite bright white). A very interesting evening indeed...

*insert XFiles music* ... Wow, that is weird stuff Crakka, good documenting, and certainly a strange goings on!!
What can you say other than WTF!
When ya blow up that little dot on the PC, I spose the resolution dies so you can't see it properly?
Keep up the good work |

Thanks guys. Seeing just the 2 trails being laid the way they were would've been enough for me as a better sighting than previous ones but the spiralling effect of both and the little "light thingies" whizzing past really made this quite the strangest one yet personally!
Glad you saw it too schadow cos it seems not too many people really notice this stuff 'specially when it's done in the vacinity of a really bright setting sun. You really do need to start keeping that camera with you at all times so we can catch different angles of the same thing
Yep niksta, my little 4mp camera is severely out of it's depth here! I tried taking shots with the zoom on the camera set right up but they come out even worse - tis better to take normal shots and blow them up on the pc. But yeah, what you see is the best I as a layman can do when getting them to fit the forum requirement (originals are 2272 x 1704 - the best quality setting on my camera). |

| Now if I'd have had an infrared videocam setup like that dude on those Youtube vids linked here recently... I reckon we'd have ourselves some pretty cool footage! If 2 of us could catch glimpses of those things whizz past with the naked eye in a short space of time I'd love to have seen what might have been captured using specialised equipment! |

Great catch Crakka :)
Very interesting ... can get similar visuals down this way, but that morphed PT is a doozy ... I have always been intrigued by the concentrated plumes within a cloud form, such as those in your last images of the twisted segment ... also interesting is the action/interaction/reaction of the other 'flight matter'.
Nice pics ... well done. |
