Well it's becoming very much the norm - yet another day of weird & wonderful cloud formations. Yep, the same old cirrus stuff we're seeing commonly and the regular coronas around the sun. Just a sample from a small part of the day as I got a chance to snap a few around the 'burbs this morning. I believe you could spend all day watching these clouds and capturing some amazing formations (but who has the time or the hard drive space!). Anyway, for those that spent today indoors here's a very small sample. Sorry for the low res again and to the 56k guys these have been reduced as far as poss without serious loss of quality. Look for the cloud "striations" & colouration on the edge of the corona -
A big long line across the sky -
And then all spread out a short while later -
And this one looks like all that cloud emanates from a single point like smoke rising from a fire or something -

| yesterday was unbelieveable - plus i saw a blatant trail lasted about half an hour (im massey east) and this was looking towards waitaks basically in my face - also saw an aircraft laying one heading from south to northeast late arvo altho in my infancy it may have been a normal contrail and after what i saw earlier i was "paranoid" - i was totally lamenting my broken camera yesterday !!!! there was also a heap of those clouds today that seem to start at one point and then totally branch out into fat fingers - cos i left my job and do have the time to look all day now  |

Over the Waitakeres and possibly over the coastline approximately around the Bethells area is where I've seen 2 lots of "stop-start" persistent trails being laid myself (one was further north than the other & snapped by John/Melody from Muriwai). Have also seen & photographed long but fading contrails heading SW to NE from Glen Eden. Good to see others spotting them out west now. See, all it takes is people outside that are actually looking for this stuff to be in the right place at the right time  Sorry to hear abour your job loss (unless it was a crap job in which case it's probably cause for celebration!). You need to get the camera fixed matey
Anyways, check out these ones taken earleir this evening. First one was taken about 4.30pm. After all the weirdy cloud and then a lot fine hazy spreadout cirrus this arvo, West Auckland was just covered in a fairly thick haze that could be seen in most directions but more easily to the west against the backdrop of the Waitakeres as in this shot -
Then about 7.45 - 8.00pm noticed a pale shimmering rainbowish colouration oriented vertically with a strange little circular "cloud" (eye-shaped?) above it just appear in the area photographed earlier as I was looking out that way before getting ready to drive off. Took the following series of photographs. Couldn't decide which was the clearest/best so just posted the whole lot so you'll hopefully see it in at least one of them (trimmed them down slightly for smaller filesize tho). As usual with such a lowtech camera it looked a lot better to the naked eye - wish I could afford a decent one to give you a better idea of what all this stuff actually looks like! Look to the centre of each shot. Sun was just about to set to the right just of the picture...
