Greetings all ...
Bit of a blitz here today ... some persistent trails that dissipate quite quickly, leaving remnants that drift, morph and/or mingle with other cloud forms. A lot of 'cirrus' haze building up.
I am yet to get photos organised (time .... ), so here are just a couple for now. - will look at posting more later tonight.
PS: I will also post a topic to cover the days since last post on 12th ... I have spotted persistent trails most days, but not an onslaught by any means - more random laying. Can observe a persistent trail in the making and along side is a contrail of the normal looking kind ... then not too long later, no trail. ..... odd ...
1. See the 'shadow' - taken 2:06pm - facing NNW
2. Another spectacular coloured cloud ... colours more vibrant with own eye.
I saw 3 planes lay persistent trails within a 2 minute period ... the first and third shared the same flight path ... staggered ... 2 planes over the valley at same time. I have not observed Thursdays to be busy flight days. |

The return! Good photos man! We've been getting tons of that weird cirrus up here yesterday and today, with today's being the most extensive and odd-shaped.
Like the "rainbow colour" shot. Now I've seen that up here on those same clouds I know what to look for every time
Strikes me that as we're seeing a lot of much of the same cloud forms, there's possibly more going on up here than we sight by eye. I've only ever sighted a few trails actively being laid up here but they are so few and far between and definitely not regular over any built-up areas. However, when out on the west coast in various locations I've seen a lot of what appears to me and others as trails that might have been laid only a short while ago and haven't spread out too much. Back over built-up areas these appear similar but way more spread out. I wished sometimes I lived on the coast and was able to observe and photograph more cos I'm certain we're missing at least one two trail layings up here! I still think that because of the narrow width of land in Auckland, any trails that are laid could mostly be done just offshore but that may be wild speculation of course :greenalien: |

Here are some more images of today .... a lot of activity for limited sky space ...
3. 2:04pm - facing N. Three fresh persistent trails (as mentioned in first post) ... all northbound ... the first and third plane same flight path on east (right).
4. 2:08pm - facing N... cirrus mass and northbound persistent trail being laid (upper centre). Old persistent trails to west and east.
5. 11:22am ... intense cloud form - wave like formation ...
Re the coloured cloud phenomena (as in image # 2) .... I have been watching the skies for about 6 years - usually in Marlborough, mostly in the Pelorus valley .... observations of coloured cloud have increased over the last 6 months or so. The persistent trails decreased in frequency - the colours increased. |

Far out Ruapaka ...
Correct me if I am wrong but the angle from which picture 2 was taken is a used as a regular photographic vantage point by you? if thats the case seems a few formations pop up in that spot.
It happens quickly these days, within a couple of minutes flyover the sky changes it whole 'complexion'.
Looking at sequence 3 and 4 I also observed exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago over Kapiti island. Looks to me like some sort of weird etheric explosion if i beg to stretch everyones imagination... as for the last shot, thats stunning.
The weather up here today was overcast .. couldnt see the south island and the sky immediately above it because of that.
Getting off topic a bit - Someones re published jacques valle's underground classic 'passport to magonia' ... check out the new cover

No correction needed - you are quite right Secondfield ... I do not have many vantage points. The area in #2 is just slightly NE of the coloured cloud I captured on 12 Jan ... yes indeedy I think there are 'hot-spots'. |

| Thanks for the pics Ruapaka.Thursday we definitely got hammered, yet friday we got to see the blue sky in all its glory,so I am at a loss to why no one else comments on the trails because if it is not obvious to your average Marlburian then they are surely blind or just plain braindead, sorry to be negative but we are increasingly getting seriously f%$#ed off at whats happening above us. |

Yep, keep those pics coming ruapaka!
Have to agree A Butler. Atm we're actually experiencing some brilliant & almost clear blue skies up here in Auckland. I was thinking yesterday that if we were getting the degree of trails you guys get there overhead here then surely with our dense population we'd have at least a few people jumping up & down. As I've said before I've only seen one persisitent trail actually in the process of being laid going right across the whole sky above Auckland city in the last year and that was this one last year in September taken in the downtown city area with a mobile phone -
As you can see there was just enough cloud around that most people going about their business would never have even noticed it. Also it started to spread out as per normal and by half an hour later unless you knew what you were looking at it was almost impossible to distinguish.
Apart from that it's been the odd trail that I've seen soon after it had just been laid (but very obvious) and some "stop-start" ones being done out over the west coast. |
