Kia ora koutou :)
We did the family picnic thing yesterday - Pine Valley, Northbank, Wairau Valley - had a great day – quality time and renewing a grounded connection with the land and it’s offerings (we be so privileged to live in this country – I appreciate that muchly).
Sorry for delay - too tired last night to get into sorting a post out ... but the day was great for an outing ... and got some reasonable images of what was happening in our neck of the woods - Marlborough .
Many cirrus forms observed during the day .... and what often goes with cirrus ? ... many persistent trails – most of which I observed ‘persisted’ in segments – behaving like typical persistent trails .. all of the trails I observed were heading north or west. Some unusual striking cloud forms were also observed in both the Wairau and Pelorus Valleys. When home in the Pelorus Valley early evening , I only observed contrails – most of which were what I would call, long contrails. Most of the sylph like forms were observed during time back at Pelorus. Quickly changing sky at times - from clear to scattered cirrus forms and glowing condensed cirrus forms, then clear again.
I also observed oil slick patches and small clouds while at Pine Valley. (no images).
Today 5 Jan ... pretty quiet – mostly clear as sky. Contrails only, observed. Around 3:30pm noticed typical segments of persistent trails -bands drifting, segmenting again ... so, some persistent trails being laid elsewhere west /nor-west of me, (Nelson / Tasman).

SUNDAY, 4 JANUARY
Northbound persistent trail with ‘shadow’. Taken from lower Pelorus Valley – 10:20am – facing north.
We watched for a couple of minutes as the upper cloud drifted quickly eastward ... the ‘shadow’ drifting with the cloud.. The trail appeared to remain pretty much in the same place. The distance between the trail and the shadow increased. ??? Does it make sense for a shadow to move without altering either the source of light or the object casting the shadow?? mmmmmm ...
Taken from north side of Wairau Valley (Northbank) - 11:05am – facing N.
Pine Valley, Marlborough – 12:29pm – facing N. Tearing apart or unable to join? Many persistent trails observed this day and location.
Pine Valley, Marlborough – 14:23pm – facing NE. One of the many cloud types/forms seen this day.
Pine Valley – facing N – 3:01pm. Two segments of persistent trails meeting .... some altitude difference, but appeared minimal ... they drifted closer together as well as drifting eastward – spreading, maintaining length.
Pine Valley – 3:20pm – facing NE.
Old and new persistent trails. New trail was northbound. The new trail is not constant at the intersection. Next image for zoom.
LONG CONTRAILS & AIRCRAFT
Pelorus Valley – 7:20pm – facing NNW.
Long contrail and close-up of plane –northbound on regular path. No visible markings .
Pelorus Valley – 7:27pm – facing NNW.
Long contrail and close-up of plane – northbound on regular path. Red tail area.
CLOUD SAMPLE ... all observed in the Pelorus Valley

Great photos again ruapaka!
Contrails were the same as what we saw on Sunday in Glen Eden - longer than most you see and what looked like a plain, unmarked twin-engined aircraft, although hard to be exact on markings at that distance without a zoom.
The skies yesterday (Tues 5 Jan) were quite a mess over Auckland at times with funny stuff all over the place from late morning onwards. Several of these big, wide spreadout formations drifted across from the west where they started as thinner "line" formations, spreading out wider and wider as they did so. I've seen quite a bit of this same formation in the last few months and the way it always forms from thinner lines in the same area of western sky then spreads out both ways as it drifts across West Auckland just doesn't look quite natural to me (although I'm just a pleb when it comes to meterology so prove me wrong!). Maybe someone can describe this cloud type and it's spreading habit to us. Not the best example of it but the only one we snapped later in the afternoon -

Hey there Crakka ...
Could be an old persistent trail ... I have seen segments drift east down the valley and change in appearance dramatically - end up looking more like 'normal' cloud forms. mmmm?? |

They are quite a distinctive formation and yeah, I was going to say something about the way they spread right out - sometimes fairly quickly and definitely "dramatically" as you say - to become vast amounts of thin overcast-type cloud. I saw a huge, long one in Henderson in a fairly clear blue sky before Christmas that was just so unnatural looking the way it drifted in and spread out. It was a day I had no card in my camera and was just popping into a store to try and buy one to get a shot! I ended up just watching it drifting and spreading wider and wider with the same sideways striations as in the above shot until it covered quite a vast area. It was quite an amazing view for about a good 10mins or so! |

| Oh and my apologies  - I've got the usual start-of-a-new-year blues with my dates! I meant to type "Mon 5 Jan" above not Tues as I did. My contrail thread also had the dates screwed although hopefully that'll be repaired soon enough  |
