Lots going on in the sky today, mainly we saw crap drifting over from the the top of the South Island but did see trails laid out later in the day.
I will upload some pics later tonight but here is one to start...
This link takes you too a larger file of the same pic http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3221/3106056615_95f3d7aed5_o.jpg |

I was moving all around town today and missed whatever was going on in the morning because I didn't get up until after midday so the photos are from several different locations.
2 things I noted today were a metallic taste in my mouth after being outside for a few hours and later in the afternoon I was with a mate fishing and I noticed what appeared to be little drops of an oil like substance landing on the water, it was weird, oily rainbow splotches just appearing on the water one after another which I managed to video.
Im not sure how it turned out the vids yet although I checked the car windscreen etc to see if anything had falled on it but couldt distinguish anything from the filth that was already all over the car. |

Good photos smashdracs. Is that first one a trail or sun rays piercing the cloud cover? Looks like the latter but it's a little hard to tell exactly. Quite impressive whatever it is!
We've seen that "ring around the sun" a bit over the last few months as well. The weekend before last we saw probably the best example I've seen in ages - very similar in clarity and contrast to your photo. |

If by first one you mean the pic at the very top it is a trail from behind an aircraft, if you look closely you can see the plane, the trail does not appear to be coming from the engines but rather from across the entire wing span, I am guessing that is because of damp air being compressed as the jet slams through it. |

| Re - the second image posted ... the clouds in the foreground - skeletal look about them - also seen in the Pelorus area ..not so for the cloud forms in the background. |

Thanks, I couldn't quite make that out as an aircraft clearly first glance. I'll look closer next time  Interesting the way it's formed right across like that as you say - gives the trail a big solid appearance.
Another interesting observation is when aircraft pass through large areas of cloud and leave a "non-trail", like a big, long line cut right through it & kinda the opposite effect of a trail in clear sky. |
