I have been practicing the zoom thing ... I got these images recently and am wondering what they are. (I also captured a hang-glider ... cooool - another rare sight in the valley ... even coooooler when I get a tripod)

The plane was a lucky shot as not often seen on that path - often heard coming and going further south, beyond the ridge behind us.

We get a lot of helicopters through the valley, but not often sight these ones.

There’s been ‘talk’ of military training deep in the Richmond Ranges. Military helicopters have been seen, on more than one occasion by locals, going over into the ranges at the top end of the Wakamarina Valley. It’s not rare to see convoys of military vehicles in this area on SH6 ... Woodbourne to ? and back.

Hi ruapaka

Top one looks like the good old Huey

See here
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/uh-1.htm

The lower one probably is a Bombardier Q300

See here

http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/on-the-plane/seat-maps/bombardier-q300-popup.htm

Take note of the square T tail section

I see from Air NZ web site that the Bombardier flys in and out of Blenheim

Where might those planes be flying to, or coming from? As far as I know there are no flights to Nelson from Blenheim - nor any international flights. Westport or Greymouth maybe?? It was flying lower than usually observe, but it seemed quite large - appearance and sound ... then again, I'm far from knowledgeable about aircraft. I've seen many planes leaving the airport at Woodbourne (Blenheim) and do not recall seeing any head out toward the Pelorus area (NW). I was thinking the plane probably came from Wellington.

I am pretty sure the same sort of plane flew over us at around 6.15pm last night. From a westerly direction heading down the valley and reasonably low,and I agree its not normal to see them that low heading in that direction.
