These "formations" seem quite similar in a lot of respects to what we're pretty sure were persistent trails seen over West Auckland on 20 Oct 2008. Here's the link to those for reference & comparison - http://www.mysteriousnewzealand.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1185

Take a look and see what you think. Maybe you can even tell us what type of "clouds" these are. All shots were taken between around 7.00 - 7.30pm. The last one shows the impressive-looking sky just to the right of the formations in the first 3 photos and looking almost directly west towards the Waitakere Ranges. (There is an unatural bend to the trail-like formations in shot 3 due to the method of creating the pan shot. I'm just starting to learn how to straighten pan shots using the software but I'm totally a novice and I don't have heaps of time to put into learning atm!).

That was it for me yesterday. If you look to the right of the last pan shot you can see a dark line that seems to start from where the sun is and runs towards the right about halfway up. When I got back home I looked back up at that side of the sky and that dark line extended about the same distance as the trail-like white ones in the first three photos but it was running straight through the middle of that white cloud either side of it. Looked quite strange.

As far as camera's go mine's not really sufficient either. It catches an overall scene ok but detail is lacking being only 4mp. Good enough to get the idea of what's going on but anything at distance is a blur. I always take photos on the highest res and then resize to try and get the best detail I can. You could probably buy a decent little 7-10mp camera these days for the same price it would cost to fix your old
