Well after posting in the cloud appreciation forum this morning after waking to some amazing cloud formations earlier I guess you could say I had a feeling something else might possibly be observed later on. There was certainly plenty of stuff up there most of the day that suggested intervention but then whilst in Mt Albert driving I actually spied a persistent trail in the process of being laid at around 3pm - not an overly common sighting in Auckland but I would suggest definitely not as UNcommon an occurrence as you might think either. A few months back I spied the only really long straight persistent trail being laid right across Auckland I've seen in ages but a more common sighting lately seems to be those short bursts of persistent trail that hang around for ages and mostly blend eventually into surrounding cloud.
Unfortunately my little 4mp camera isn't really up to taking shots of trails at any real distance so the first shot I took just after I stopped on the side of the road isn't great. The photo was taken from Mt Albert looking west and the aircraft was a fair way off - totally clearly visible to the eye but didn't fair well in the photo. I actually drove to the top of Mt Albert and took a few more but they were worse. I've included a negative version where you can see it a little more clearly. You can see it's still quite thin as the aircraft in this shot had just descended slightly from left to right and left this big burst of persistent trail that just started, went for a short while then stopped again -
The following shot was looking directly at the same persistent trail 2 hours later from Pt Chevalier. As you can see it pretty much stayed right up there without spreading out too much (right above the tree bottom centre) -
I'd love to see other people catching stuff like this in Auckland on a much better camera. Having said that I've already decided what I'm going to treat myself to at the end of the year as I've seen a few 10mp+ ones around for pretty decent prices
