Greetings all from sunny Marlborough (well, most of the time :-) )

Guess what I was given as an early xmas prezzie? ... a new (to me) camera ... 8) a Fuji Finepix S9500. I been playing and playing- still lots to learn. So, should be able to get some quality shots of anomalies in this area.

Onto biz .... we have had a bit of a hammering with the rain over the last wee while ... the last time I posted the rain had started - three days later still going .. flooding, slips and washouts, and uprooted trees. The veges loved it .. a 50+ yr old tree in our shelter belt did not and uprooted. The worst flooding seen for a few years around these parts.

28 Nov I observed a cloud over our house that appeared different to others around - more dense and vivid. I noticed a pink colour and a hint of turquoise around Its fringes. The cloud broke up revealing unusual shapes for clouds. (ref. images below)

30 Nov I observed a lot of whispy cirrus/sylph forms and two persistent trails ... there could have been more trails. I am intrigued by some of the cirrus or sylph forms ... there were numerous cirrus whisps about - they drifted and either evaporated or joined with other cirrus ... BUT ... some of the forms remain almost exactly the same as they drifted slowly eastward. Their shape (including intricate details) and the angle at which they lay in the sky remained the same - very different to other cirrus forms. I watched one persistent trail and a cirrus/sylph form drifting close together .. the trail changed quickly - spreading, etc, but the form remained pretty much the same. (ref. images below)


28 Nov ...

Lower Pelorus Valley. Unusual cloud - mostly pink hue with a hint of turquoise around its fringe - more pronounced with naked eye. (Filter used). This cloud broke up into unusual shape, maintaining colours. Images taken from different angles ... note the sweeping curved line of 'no cloud' - remains the same even as the cloud disperses.

30 Nov ...



Lower Pelorus Valley. I spotted this very obvious cirrus? whisp because of its pink colour. Image brightness adjusted. The colour faded quickly - initially much brighter than able to portray in image. The only cloud like it around at the time.



Canvastown - facing west. Persistent trail - a section segmenting and spreading, with thin persistent trail remaining. Cirrus or sylph form maintaining its shape while the trail spread. Slow drift eastward.

We're getting A LOT of very similar cloud forms up in Auckland but no persistent trails sighted for a while. Very similar to your descriptions of certain things eg. line of 'no cloud' not changing etc, etc. Last Sunday especially there were some amazing "clouds" out west of Huia with big long lines of stuff covering the whole western sky in one particular area above the sea - spreadout and very trail-like but again no actual trail sightings.

Here's a shot from last Weds 26 Nov - another interesting cloud day. The "wave" pattern in this shot was particularly outstanding for a while -

Hi Ruapaka,yep I think we had a decent flood last week ,it was a bit freaky trying to sleep with the Pelorus running under the house.Still it could have been worse,you would have seen the dust blowing off our silage crop opposite your house on Sunday.At least we wont be short of firewood for the next year with trees deposited all over the farm.BTW did you see those 2 bright lights/stars? up in the sky North west of you on Saturday Night from about 9pm onwards?They werent something I,ve seen before,but a photo wouldnt have done them justice.

I think those two 'stars' may be jupiter and venus, they are very close at the moment and are in the position you described...

Thanks,I would say that would be the case,its just that they appeared out of nowhere and I had been driving the tractor mowing for 5 hours and they(the lights) caught me by surprise. :o
