Welcome Ladies & Gentlemen. Today's lesson is entitled "How to create a cloud" and subtitled "Why leave obvious trails when you can simply squirt out clouds that nobody will notice!" :D
In a recent thread I posted photos with inset zooms showing a stop-start trail in West Auckland. One that Melody also shot from Maori Bay/Muriwai. Not the sort of thing you see all the time. However, today I saw and photographed an almost identical occurrence. This time it happened in a clearer sky (from my perspective) and about 2 hours later than the last event at around 6.20-6.30pm on Friday 7 Nov 2008.
This is quite interesting considering the types of clouds we've been seeing in West Auckland during the last 2-3 weeks and especially yesterday when I snapped the refracted light effect at around the same time of day. It has certainly looked to me like there's been activity of some kind up there but I haven't been able to see or photograph any normal-looking persistent trails to speak of (if I'm to be so bold as to call trails "normal"!).
Anyway take a look at this series of photos. I saw the first bit of the trail being laid as I was driving so by the time I stopped and got the camera out progress was at the point you can see in the first photo. Despite the relatively poor quality of the photos at distance using my little 4mp camera you can still easily follow the path of the aircraft that first leaves a persistent "patch" of trail but then flies away leaving only a normal short contrail as it does. Just check the progress of the contrail tagged "da plane! da plane!" in the first shot from frame to frame. The last 3 photos then show how well the "patch" blends into surrounding cloud with one difference - all the other clouds around it move off and change shape with the wind but it strangely retains it shape pretty well and even its position in the sky. Although I only took a few photos over about 5 minutes I watched it for probably at least another 5 or so. There's most likely some difference in altitude between it and a few of the surrounding clouds but I'm pretty sure that doesn't go for ALL the other cloud up there that moved away while it appeared to "stick around" a bit more. Hmmm...

I just posts it like I sees it 8) (and I'm sorry you have to put up with my poor excuse for humour in the early hours of a Saturday morning  ).
Seems odd that there's a single patch of persistent stuff and then just normal contrail like this although there could very well be a simple, "normal" explanation for this phenomenon. Hence I've said before "comments welcome" as an prompt for someone to offer up some explanation. The last observation mentioned & photographed was 2 or 3 bits of persistent stuff then nothing again. What I do know is that over the last few weeks up here I've often see patches of "cloud" in the sky that look very different to everything around them and they do very much appear to resemble just pieces of how you would see a persistent trail slowly spread out. To me the photographs presented show at least an example of one thing that could possibly be producing this. For what reason? Your guess is as good as mine really... I'm always keen to learn like others so if there's any explanantions out there fire away :)
