Have uploaded the following photos to the gallery but wanted to post them here as soon as possible as well. Today's observation was made while working around West Auckland today and when I first saw it I almost couldn't believe it! Although these may well be just strange cloud formations when I first saw them they were perfectly straight lines all lined up with seemingly even spacing. Observation and photos were made from the Henderson area looking towards New Lynn/Titirangi (John/Melody maybe you guys saw/photographed them too?).

It took me half an hour before I had a camera in my hands and took the first photo so the "formations" had drifted apart only slightly. In fact they were quite strange in that they were VERY slow to spread and did so only slightly, generally keeping their straight line shape and position in the sky for at least a good hour or so. As you can see by the last shots there were even remnants left almost 4 hours later when ALL other clouds in the sky had disappeared completely - other clouds in the sky during the day appeared to be at levels both below and above the straight line formations.

Some kind of persistent trail pattern or weird cloud formations? I'm certainly no expert but I've seen a lot of different clouds before (always been a casual sky watcher) and I know this is something a little different yet again to anything I've seen so far. I'm sure someone here can weigh in with their opinion & experience and there may even be a simple cloud formation explanation (even if it's not a commonly observed occurrence).

I'm no photo-editing expert so have only cropped & resized these to fit while keeping original DPI res. Didn't want to go too small and lose detail but the originals were the best quality I could take on the 4mp camera I used.

The first 3 were taken from one location just before 2.30pm. 1A is the righthand one, 1B the centre & 1C the lefthand (too much work for me to panorama these together!).







The next 2 were taken just after the first 3. The first shot here is the most dramatic but believe me when viewed a half-hour earlier it was a REALLY dramatic effect in my view with much tighter straight lines and more evenly appearing spacing! Again viewed right to left.





And finally 2 shots (right to left again) from a different location not too far from the last showing the last remnants still visible at 6.15pm after all other clouds had disappeared. Hopefully you can see them in these scaled-down shots - they were very clear to the naked eye against the clear blue sky.

Sorry Crakka, unfortunately we did not photograph or even see these trails - and trails they most certainly are. We were working indoors almost all that day - would like to have seen them. If you see anything similar in the future, perhaps you could contact us.by PM or email - though phone call would probably be best in case we're not at a computer or you don't have access to one.

If photos 4 and 5 are from Railside Ave, as they seem to be, then the vector of the trails would be roughly North/South, does this seem right to you? This is, of course, basically the only vector that 'legitimately' passes completely over Auckland (closer to NNW actually). But so many of them! We've never ever seen anything similar... Very unusual. :shock:

Yeah, they're something else for Auckland aren't they!!! Wasn't sure if I'd ever see this sort of thing happen so blatantly out in the open mid-afternoon right across our city!

You're right on the location of the middle group of shots so I would say they run roughly from SSW to NNE. I tell ya, the skies over Auckland have had some very different-looking stuff in them lately :?

Keep looking up & yes, if I see anything similar again I'll make contact with you one way or another :wink:
