This unusual formation, which we assume to be a contrail, was sighted on Sunday 7.22PM approx west of the Manukau Heads, about 20 degrees above the horizon. Being back-lit by the setting sun it stood out in an otherwise muted sky. By the time we managed to park our vehicle and get the camera out, the detail had started to merge. The two fine tendrils, for example, had almost disappeared less than a minute after this pic was taken. If it was created by a normal commercial aircraft, then it would have been on the Auckland-Sydney flight vector, as far as we can judge, and which may have flown through a localised pocket of high humidity air. Other than that, I don't know what could have caused it...
It turned into a amorphous puff of cloud and hung around for at least the next 30 minutes or so, we eventually lost sight of it as we drove home.
I was browsing in the gallery and came across the image below .. similar attributes to the cloud in your photo - tendril like appendage.

Anyone familiar with the esoteric science concerning the study of 'etherics' may be able to draw something of substance from the observation and documentation of these things.
Depending on which school of thought you belong to some, interesting propositions could be bought to the table, such as the nature of these manifestations, their origon's and purpose.
Speaking personally, after reading articles and books on etherics, I have started to seriously consider the possibility of atmospheric lifeforms manifesting from time to time given the correct 'conditions' for this to occur.
The ancient lore / mythology of 'Sylphs' may have more to it than just mere superstition....
Again the name Trevor James Constable (expat kiwi author) must be mentioned, as a pioneer in this field. Others in various parts of the world (and space) have filmed writhing 'sky serpent' type creatures which take on the appearance and texure of cloud vapour..
The movie 'secret space' and 'secret space 2', both avalible free to veiw on google video, show footage of these 'creatures' or whatever they may be.
Then again, I will enquire to ascertain if superman was in the locale at the time ...
