Kia ora all

Yesterday I observed short contrails - even plumage and even dissipation .... I also observed long trails - dissipating quickly and unevenly (not persistent trails as such - not thick and/or spreading). I am suspicious of these 'long' trails as much as I am of the persistent kind. See first two images below - had to use sunnies on 2nd image.

A lot of cirrus cloud/hazy patches were quickly forming in the early part of the day - I watched a patch double in size over a 2 minute period around 6:30am.

'Long trail" ... traveling north ... taken 3:40pm - facing N (the trail is longer than in camera shot - you can just make out the faint remnants)

Another long trail ... traveling south .... taken 3:53pm - facing W ... (doesn't show the actual length of the trail including it's remnants)

Today, 23 September .... Earlier this morn I had started to post this topic and was interrupted - outside and noticed two persistent trails above our house. We have weather warnings for Marlborough for later today ... much evidence of suspicious sky activity preceding weather fronts :!:

I got a couple of shots - I'll post when processed.

Here are two photos taken today - 23 Sept'

It is presently (early avo) overcast with imminent rain.

Persistent trails - northbound ... taken 10:15am.

Another view .... taken 10:17am - facing north ....off into the distance ... Can't be sure the craft were traveling together - very close though.

I observed a similar thing up here in Hamilton yesterday. Short trails dissipating very quickly and evenly, persistent trails hanging round for an hour or more (dissipating slowly and unevenly). Then at the end of the day, as the sun was setting, I saw double trouble. There were two short trails running parallel to each other (again dissipating quickly). I would normally have put it down to ordinary flight traffic except there were two.( I can't believe that it was mere coincidence)
Pics below, unfortunately not the best. Pics were taken while these trails were being formed(only editing that has been done is crop and resize)

Hi Treknut,

Can you please confirm the timings shown in the photos are correct ? plus the dates?

According to RASNZ (astronomical society) sunset should occur at 18.22 or so ...

If you could also please give an approximate direction of the flights I may be able to track down additional info about them from an ATC (air traffic control) contact in your locale.

Cheers!

That'd be good seconfield as 2 flying together like that surely isn't too common and on the face of it could be construed as pretty out of the ordinary activity! Also the coincidence of double trails in both Marlborough & Hamilton on the same day begs for some kind of explanation.

Good on you and well done Treknut for the images ... because of the glare from the cirrus haze (sometimes very thin) it can be frustrating getting clear pics. I use a cheap pair of sunnies as a filter - a bit of a juggle but very good at dealing with the glare and white-out pics.

The twin persistent trails I observed and photographed were today - 23 Sept. Just thought I would clear that one up Crakka. :)

I thought it was going to rain this avo, but it did not. The full cloud cover dispersed in patches and I was able to observe more 'long' trails and a contrail ... and get most of the lawns done.

I have another image to add as soon as approved.

Here is a response from Hamilton ATC..

Quote:
Can't really help you re the photos with regard to actual scheduled aircraft times, as we do not use those timetables ... I would have to be in the tower at the time and watching the radar ... as we are the second busiest Tower in NZ now, we do not monitor the radar outside of about 30 miles HN ... too busy looking out the window to ensure that the planes don't hit !! From the photos, they would appear to be aircraft contrails, and with GPS tracking/navigation being used nowadays, it is common for aircraft tracks to be very close to each other. To further confirm, the Met office would have to be contacted to see if the atmospheric conditions that day and time were favourable for the formation of contrails ...

Not much help really, but frank comments none the less ..

Of the times when I have approached ATC re aircraft ID's etc, they really haven't had access to the required info. As stated above, they are only really concerned with monitoring whats taking off and landing ...

The impression I get is that our skies are wide open for any throttle jockeys in jets.

Hi secondfield,
Unfortunately I couldn't get back to you any sooner (internet problems). The date and times are correct. By sunset, I mean the sun was starting to get low on the horizon.
The direction of the aircraft was from the north heading south and it was west of my location.
Also the "info" that you got doesn't really surprise me. It seems to be the same game we play at work. It's called "Passing The Buck"
