In June of 2005 in this thread, I suggested that the eagerness to launch into NZ's largest vaccination campaign with the aim of vaccinating 1.1 million young people under the age of 20 might have a lot to do with health officials' desire to get that 1.1 million young people onto the National Immunisation Register for life.
The register is effectively a national database recording details on every child and young person, including names, date of birth, gender, National Health index number, ethnicity, nominated healthcare professionals and details of their parents and guardians...
Recent revelations about the very temporary nature of the vaccine and the fact that it was known about and underemphasised at the time, in my view, further strengthens the theory that the vaccination itself may not have been the priority objective. Establishing a lifetime database record for as many children as possible, and using fear to encourage parents to be party to it, possibly was.
At the time I did some investigation into the National Immunisation Register and discovered that while an opt-off option does exist, anyone who has had the MeNZBTM vaccine cannot opt-off. That option is withdrawn as soon as a dose of MeNZBTM is received. No going back.
So, the campaign was strident, expensive ($200 million was allotted), coercive and highly publicised. Health officials were aware of the limited value of it, giving protection only for a matter of months (had parents been more aware, perhaps many more would have chosen not to participate) and they achieved three-dose coverage for 80 per cent of the target group (around 880,000 signons for the National Immunisation Register, now committed to it for life).
This morning's Herald editorial is rightly critical. They cite the manufacturer's literature describing the trials saying that the vaccine had "a good safety profile and generates strong immune responses in the target age groups". They point out that had the limitations not been glossed over that the campaign might have been more difficult.
In their closing paragraph the raise the question of whether, four years on, the money might have been better spent on something else.
I think it depends how much value the government (or those with strong vested interest) was placing on populating their lifetime database. Why withdraw the NIR opt-off for this particular vaccine? Surely the right to opt off the register should remain with the individual throughout life, just as the database record is lifelong? In a majority of cases that right has been removed before the individual is of an age to decide for themselves whether they wish to remain on the register.
As I also suggested in my 2005 post, "with a shift in emphasis and justification, the National Immunisation Register would the perfect vehicle to 'tack on' other information at a later date..."
I heard an interview on the radio yesterday morning about it. It highlights the serious lack information given to parents about the length of time the vaccination was effective for, preventing parents from making an informed decision. Even health professionals aren't given the full information.
One of the people interviewed, Linda Williams from the Auckland Women's Health Council came across as very angry about the whole situation and said she found it difficult to find the information through their normal channels. She has spoken to many mothers about it who didn't believe her until she gave them documentation to prove it. Her opinion is that the $200 million funds alloted was not money well spent.

Thanks for the link Carus. Nikki Turner certainly seems to be making very different statements to those made in the thick of the campaign when fear and retribution were running rife and parents choosing not to vaccinate were being made to feel very bad about the decision...
