The Ministry of Health should buck up its ideas about mercury amalgam dental fillings. With the FDA in the US now indicating a shift its position about the safety of using these fillings the Ministry of Health is still saying they will wait until they get more evidence of the risks.
On a recent interview on Radio NZ about the issue, there is the very valid question:
If mercury is cited as dangerous to the environment why are we putting it in our mouths?
Perhaps it’s a matter of economy (albeit false economy as it can cause costly health problems down the track), as they are the cheapest option and the only option offered under the free dental care given for children up to 18 years.
I had direct experience of this earlier this week when taking our son to the dentist. As I did not want to accept the offer of free amalgam fillings I am choosing to go for the white, more expensive fillings at my considerable cost.
As far as I’m concerned, it’s better to do it properly now rather than to waste money down the track getting them removed if the Ministry decides they are a health risk.
Apart from that where is the sense in putting these fillings in children when they are ones at the greatest risk with the neurotoxins released from the fillings affecting their developing brains up to the age of 18 years.
Why are we clinging to an outdated hazardous method when there are safer, more effective products available?
