London-based Ploughshares is not the bunch of poor hippy peace protesters it makes itself out to be.
Just like the UN they push global disarmament (eg no guns for citizens either) and claim a mandate to disable warplanes and other military equipment. How radical! But Ploughshares financial report on the web lists their assets at $23 million .... poor hippies!
And the story doesn't end there. The organisation has a substantial international staff and well-connected board of advisers including none other than Leslie H. Gelb, President Emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations and Lawrence J. Korb, a CFR Director of National Security Studies. Now they are interesting advisers for a hippie peacenik group;

I smell $hit.
A covert war against activists is currently being waged in NZ. It involves high tech surveillance, the media, agents provocateurs and thugs. All with big money from secret sources behind them.
Anybody feeling afraid yet?
Dont. That is the biggest weapon that can be levelled against a person who chooses to speak up against an established order.

it's all around the english-speaking world, by now, and there's no going back, after the major crimes committed in the cause of grabbing power, (911, 7/7 port arthur etc.)if there was exposure and calling to account, by now, most of the powerbrokers would be slammed in a cage for the rest of their lives
it's a new kind of situation
don't throw your life away, just giving thugs some practice
keep cool, little hot-heads, keep the info circulating, invest in a flock of carrier pigeons, for when the turkeys take away our beloved internet

I hear this kind of statement a lot and sometimes it seems that it could be a likely eventual scenario - except that business is now too dependent on the internet for the consumer dollar to see the internet die. Online advertising is seen as the big cash cow these days - Fairfax didn't pay $700 million for Trade Me for nothing, as traditional classifieds tumble towards oblivion...
And government is becoming increasingly dependent on it as more and more government departments cut costs by making their services available online. And I don't think any kind of cashless society could exist without the internet either.

doesn't the probable vision of the neocons look like this?:
allowing unrestrained growth, for the present
infiltrating all the worlds financial institutions
dispensing huge dollars to corrupt selected key people and institutions
hiding behind a bloated public service, within which corrupt lawyers rewrite our centuries-old laws, to legalise largescale crime
setting up a world that is owned by a very small group, which needs only a few slaves, enjoys a big beautiful world, with the advantages of the technology we have set up
we are soon to be declared redundant, along with Trade Me, the Geneva convention, the majestic heritage of law since ancient Rome and the Magna Carta
there are already private parallel police and intelligence agencies springing up
no doubt there will be a private parallel internet, when required
out and out fascist tyranny does not need much in the way of a public service, and an automated production system does not need much in the way of a labour force

I still don't think it adds up. Generally these types are driven toward more and more and more - more of everything, the kind of 'more' that logic doesn't account for. I think that the striving for more ultimately would see such a scenario work rather differently...
I also feel that the reason many people are drawn to holding these kinds of fatalistic views about the world is because it affords them a kind of certainty, albeit a dim and disheartening one, but certainty none the less, which feels preferable to them than not knowing what will happen and what the future holds. Some people will almost do anything to avoid uncertainty, sometimes even destroy themselves.
And certainty, and the need to have it, is the very thing that allows such scenarios to assume power, making them more likely to succeed. The more people agree that others have power over them, the more it becomes so.

whatever, Melody, i find that the certainty most people cling to is
more of the same
whether it's bully bankers, transparently dishonest pollies, and a parasitic professional class, or any other thing
when i realised what murderous thugs our beloved leaders are, it gave me no solace at all, can't speak for the other 6 billion-odd stakeholders
don't forget, the "leaders" in question are genius level intellects, and emotional nobodies.......dangerous to themselves and us all
perhaps your preoccupation with certainty is projection........again, i can't speak for all, but i have a happy friendship, personally, with the perilous aspect of our human life, and i've fielded more perils and hazards than most people i've met
