Hi all ...
Today was a blitz of trails and cirrus look-alike formations. I took quite a few images in the Pelorus Valley today and a couple when I was up the Wakamarina Valley - some interesting formations. After loading onto computer I discovered 3 disc like shapes in 2 of the images. Birds? - I think not - what you all think?
I empathise with the dial-up folk for the time to load this topic (I'm dial-up too) - but I felt these images worthy of a good look.
11:31am - facing West from lower Pelorus Valley
11:31am - facing South
11:53am - facing West - I watched a persistent trail spread and break up, then became this formation.
11:53am - facing NE - persistent trail - hazy wide band type + ...
Concentrated cloud form - above center. Two black 'discs' near. (ref enlargement with insets next image)
3:09pm - facing NW from up Wakamarina Valley

Damn fine shots there....
It would be good if we could get exact bearings (in degrees, North refrence) utilisng a simple compass (silva). And possibly a google earth lat/long of the observation site. That way we could get a better idea exactly where these things are concentrated, Trail headings etc...
I suspect there is more to this trail buisness than we will ever want to know about.... |

That first object in the picture looks oblong or rectangular with a couple of appendages off at an angle on either end.
The second one, to my eye, is disc shaped.
Smashdracs has also photographed fleeting images of these things.
If you can positively discount birds,These things must move incredibly quickly |

A couple of snaps from yesterday - Upper Hutt, Wgtn, 1200-1230pm facing NW.
A faint black line or shadow can be seen in the second toward the end of the trail. The sky is still clogged with artifical haze over marlborough today...

Yesterday was one of the bad ones as far as "dirty" skies go.
Those weird objects are interesting, they must have a base near you :) I saw and photographed several ufos over there. I also had a disk shaped object pop up in my pics taken in Wellington yesterday.
I will be keeping a close eye on it (the sky) today... |

Interesting shots of those unknown objects Ruapaka. I have given a lot of thought to the birds explanation over the years. In fact, here's a link to a past post that expressed some of my views at the time...
https://www.mysteriousnewzealand.co.nz/forums/viewtopic.php?p=2802#2802
I still feel that the explanation has a lot of holes. I think in some cases, birds might explain things, however, I think it's rare the explanation would be satisfactory. We take a LOT of photos out in the field and often happen to capture birds in the scene and of the hundreds and hundreds of photos we have on file, generally the wings tend to be visible to some degree. The size of the object in your shots also seems to be too large for a bird.
As I said at the time, a Google Image search for birds in flight, illustrates the point quite well. |

Hi all ...
It is a good feel when you think something and then discover others think the same. I have not researched this topic to any real degree ... in some ways that is good - my observations are not influenced. :D
Melody - I was nodding away reading your post and links ... birds I have caught in images have irregular shape - quite often torpedo shaped, but mostly the wing(s) jut out. Greg Avery refers to dark disc shapes as 'pucks' - YES! I thought the same in this instance.
The image where two 'pucks' were revealed - that was directly above my home. Maybe they onto me  Those type of cloud (concentrated plumes & puffs of cirrus) intrigue me - feel they are not right, although aesthetic shapes and beautifully white. They don't drift like other cloud forms nor does their shape change much. Just my obs. |
