On my way into Blenheim yesterday (9 April) I took this image in the Kaituna Valley - facing NE. Many clouds like this - cirrus / virga. Cloud mass moving in from the SW.
Today (10 Arpil) was a reasonably heavy trail day - or rather it started out that way. Busy day for aircraft - many big planes, but also many smaller planes flying lower than usual. Helicopters too. A day for sightseers or property developers or business investors looking to jump on NZ/China trade deals. :-)
I thought the days cloud behaviour was different from the usual - started out with heavy fog until about 10am (usual for this area in cooler temps) - morning trails were long and persistent yet not so from midday on - normal looking contrails. I first noticed persistent trails late morning and only to the west. That changed a couple of hours later when a mass of cirrus formations appeared to drift in from the north - not usual at all. Most days clouds come in from the west. Cirrus formations seemed to materialise (or condense?) in pockets then merge together. Similar cirrus formations as day before (image above) but todays temperature was much warmer.
Facing west - 11:08am .... to the north and east the sky was clear.

extreme chem over here too, last two days, especially Wednesday.......i saw 40 up there that day, and that was probably half the story
if you had looked at the Japanese satellite pic of Australia, you'd have seen an oblong cloud between Sydney and Melbourne, that was entirely artificial
you couldn't say "man-made", because they're not men, but monsters
Do the 'holepunch' clouds generally form in the same spot as youve seen them before? any bearing / distance estimation from where the last pic was taken?
I got some pic's yesterday sunset Im just processing now, shows a couple of strange cloud formations over your way. Will post them on the other thread as some anomalies were noticed. Just waiting confirmation from ATC source re aircraft flight data.
I get a good clear veiw out over the top of the south island from the west coast of wellington (Titahi bay), saw those trails you mentioned being laid in the morning and saw the sylph like cirrus drift southward later that afternoon...
Seems similar skyscapes here and in Aus .. got the same 'supersaturation with respect to ice' happening over their Steve. Trails and similar formations on the same day all the way over there.

Secondfield - I do not think this is the standard holepunch cloud - the cloud developed around the hole - not other way around. Holepunch being the ice gets too heavy and falls - this did not happen. I have not observed any holepunch clouds in this area - (I have only seen images of the phenomena).

The last two images were taken from basically the same spot (dodging the glare of the sun) 28 mins apart. The hole was smack in the middle of the valley - right over the river at the lower end of the Pelorus.
Here is a pic I took on the same day not long before spotting the hole. Notice the 'swirl' slightly left of center. This was SE of the 'hole' and drifted South out of view - I was unable to see any further formation. Maybe the hole in above pics began this way ???

first of all, we must pay our respects to the not-great, non-god, Scepticism........those might just be normal clouds, yessiree !
what i noticed, on top of the vortex you pointed out, is the two parallel lines of standing waves, in quite narrow bands, in the ENE orientation
there seem to be twelve lines for four striations in the clouds they cross
for my money, the theory of pulsed energy fits just as well as the "normal cloud" theory, and if pulsing type clouds are seen more often in the company of chemtrails, the balance begins to tip towards the conspiracy end of the sceptic spectrum, you might say, the septic end
