17 March ... I was in Blenheim on this day - there were no visible persistent trails in the Pelorus Valley area - seemed to be restricted to the east and south of our region. Blenheim was cloud free - not even a hazy cirrus patch - but there were many persistent trails.
18 March ... lingering persistent trails in the valley in later part of the day. I was in Blenheim again today and observed many persistent trails - north and south bound - they dissipated unevenly, leaving segmented pieces to spread into bands of thin hazy patches. In the valley the trails did not dissipate - long bands blending with cirrus 'sylph' like cloud.
When I was young we did the 'see the cloud shape' often. We ALWAYS looked up with the sound of an aircraft to see a possible contrail - rare sight then. There was not the air traffic as today, so it was a novelty to see. Aside from all the conspiracy theories, why is it no fuss is being made about the persistent trails except by those like us who question their authenticity? If it were simply a case of pollution, why is there no world wide push to minimise the damage - as done with land transport emissions? How come there is more saturation with respect to ice in our atmosphere than there was when I was young? Global warming? Bahooooey

But there is. There are already various schemes in place (taxes, carbon offsetting), and governments and airlines all over the world are investigating other ways of lessening the impact of aircraft pollution on the atmosphere (and hence ,climate).
Nice pics Ruapaka, please continue to post pics of any cloud formations which you believe resemble sylph activity. Especially if you witness persistant contrails appearing afterwards.
