apricot flashing 1, the way it would be called on a nautical chart, or near enough
9.20pm yesterday est., (28th Feb), saw this strange light out the window, moving in the normal place for Syd-Melb traffic, at pretty much normal speed, but..........
no quick strobelights, just a pale apricot orange, more than yellow, a hint of pink, that pulsed about once per second, smoothly, without seeming to ever go completely out, just close to it, then ramping up and down quite evenly
it first struck me as being larger, and a bit brighter than a normal plane
i jumped out of bed and grabbed the binocs, no use thinking about the camera, because of its lag factor starting up and focusing issues at night
i thought i would get some sort of look at the hull.......the craft, whatever, looked oblong at first.........
i didn't see this::::: but my wife said it was tilted forward slightly,......... nose down, i was racing around like a fart in a bottle, when she saw this
my first sight of it through binocs was as it traversed behind some gum trees close to the house. it looked like a cluster of blurry lights, in a strange shape, with a triangular element above, and a little trail coming down in the front, all evenly pulsing together
i thought someone had fiddled with the focus adjustment
by the time it got past the gums, and was visible again, it would have been 10 kilometers away by my reckoning, but was still pretty big and bright, and still blurry
by this time i had checked the binocs on some stars, and they were in good focus, and clear as a bell
the object never came into any sort of clear focus
in many ways it behaved like a plane, but if so, it had multiple lights, not three or four but thirtyish, all in synch and spread over a hull, whatever, that i could only imagine must be bloody ginormous
anybody else ever see anything like this ? there was no noise, but that's normal for jets here

Interesting stuff Steve,
Your sighting roughly seems to fit the pattern of many UFO sightings around the world. I say roughly because there are nearly as many variations as there are sightings. I did a quick Google search the other night as I was intrigued by the apricot colour and multiple lights aspects of your sighting. Apricot is somewhat a subjective colour at times, it is also possible for multiple coloured lights to blend and give the perception of an entirely different colour. Red and yellow lights close together may, at a distance or and foggy circumstances, appear orange (even apricot). So I also searched yellow and orange lights.
Here is just a few of the many results that came up:

I can't quote directly from this page as right-click is disabled however it is a report from a RAF engine technician of 22 years who saw something flying at 4-500ft altitude like a plane but "eerily silent" and covered in yellow lights...

A 1987 report: The description of the object differed slightly between the observers. Mrs Wallis saw no real outline except a dull apricot glow, however the Chandlers saw a more definite oval shape within the glow. Mrs Wallis saw three rows of lights. The topmost set were very tiny, and were lemon yellow, and flashed erratically and rapidly 'like Christmas tree lights'. The second row below these top little lights were oval red large lights. These were characterized by being very bright and were like disco light chasers moving from left to right as she was viewing it. The third row of lights were like portholes on a ship, green coloured, smaller than the red lights but larger than the yellow lights. There were a large number of red and green lights, and fewer yellow lights arrayed about the periphery.
Just one of a few orange light sightings on this page:
While having a cigar in the back garden I noticed a three line formation of lights orange in appearance. The three lights were blurry but flashing quite large in size compared to a normal airplane. They traveled in south to north direction covering the line of sight in approximately 15 seconds a lot faster than a normal plane would travel.
Mel and I have seen much strange in the sky over the years and plan to write about it on Myst NZ some day. Meanwhile, reports such as Steve's are very welcome - though, things being what they are, may not elicit many comments - don't take it personally...

good googling, John,
only thing i can add is that those lights were baffling in the way they looked so much like the lenses on the binocs were smeared heavily ,and they weren't. i was looking for hull shape but saw nothing , and the oval shape without binocs, completely vanished into the triangle and the dangly bit at the front, under magnification
i've spent plenty of time looking up at night, but have only seen a few of this sort of thing
